Case Study - Fitbit
Today in Tech we learnt about the FitBit, A watch that tracks your heart-rate, steps and calories. The First FitBit was made in 2009 and now has a lot of watches. The most expensive one being around $500. It was one of the first smartwatches and now has a lot of competitors like the Apple Watch and Garmin.
I think the FitBit is an information system because it has a variety of parts that takes and provides data to the user. For example, it takes how much hours you have slept and presents it to you when you have woken up. It can also come up with solutions for your problems. For example, if you are gaining calories and not doing your usual steps, a pop up will appear on your device encouraging you and prompting you to do more. When the Fitbit presents and provides the data or information, it presents it in a user friendly way, making you want to use it more.
Constraints are limitations or restrictions. They can be Social, Technical, Economic and Usability.
The FitBit has some constraints in all of these categories as well as all of its competitors.
Some of these Constraints are:
Social: Only High Class people would buy a FitBit back when it first came out. Also, the watch has no Social Media like Snapchat, Instagram e.t.c.
Technical: The Watch couldn't do everything the user wanted it to do. E.g. It couldn't summon a jet or a parachute.
Economic: FitBit was a very expensive watch when it first came out so not many people wanted to get it.
Usability: The watch can't be dropped in Lava or dropped in water for too long.
Overall, I believe that the FitBit was a great invention and that it is now something everyone has or wants.
