More than just a piece of land by Gayle Kennedy + Ross Carnsew

This term, our second book which we just started reading this week in the Red Group, after reading Jali Boy is "More than just a piece of land" by Gayle Kennedy + Ross Carnsew. So far, I have learnt that this book is a short graphic novel. This means that it is basically a short novel in cartoons.

Based on the first chapter of the book, the story is based around a Indigenous Australian family, mum Shaz, dad Rick, Lara and her naughty younger brother Presto. The story is based around the perspective of the girl Lara. Their parents have worked very hard and finally made enough money to buy back a piece of traditional land, which they were forced off into a housing estate. The kids do not want to move though because Presto has a best friend Faris and Lara has a best friend Ishie. They have made many friends and got used to their school so they are really angry about moving, but they have to, which they did. I can empathise with them because I was unsure about starting karate because I only had two friends to rely on, but in the end it was fine.

I predict that by the way that the children are acting repulsively towards moving homes, so they might come back to the housing estate often or they might find a way to adapt and belong to their new home.

  1. I like how you made connections to your life. This is a great way to dig deeper into the emotions of the character. I look forward to seeing what themes are presented in the book. Well done on a well written blog.
