Sydney Harbour Bridge Wk 5
Sydney Harbour Bridge
This book consists of a series of diary entries by two main characters, Alice and Billy, whom write about their Families weathering the Great Depression, the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a some politics regarding Mr Lang, the premier of NSW during that time. I believe this book is a historical narrative because the Great Depression and the Sydney Harbour Bridge are all real, but the main characters Alice and Billy are fictional.
The main characters all have different perspectives, opinions and situations about the Bridge and the depression. Some people believe it would be foolish to spend 3,000,000 pounds (a lot in that time) on building a bridge when we they were in a depression where even the top end of town was struggling with general life.
The Harbour Bridge enabled hundreds of people (men dominated) to get jobs. I can make a connection to this because Billy's dad was frantically looking for work and the Harbour Bridge is the reason why Billy didn't move to happy valley, like his mate Davo.
I disagree with Mr Lang, the premier of NSW because he refuses to pay off the monumental debt and the more he leaves it the more debt he will pay. This could mean that he ends up paying 3x more than he loaned and this would put the decaying state in turmoil.
Predictions I have for the next half of the book is that the Harbour Bridge will be finished and Mr Lang will be kicked out of office so he can be replaced by a person who will immediately pay off the loan and the debt to England and the crown. And maybe Davo would return from happy valley and Billy will get to see him again.
I believe this book is interesting and I look forward to reading more.
