Snowy Week 5

This term the yellow group has been reading the book Snowy by Siobhan McHugh. I've really enjoyed the book so far.

I like how the story is set in first person as we can an idea of how the character telling the story is feeling as at the beginning of the book we could tell Eva was upset she was leaving Sydney as she said "It should be a happy day, Diary- still a week to go of the school holidays but all I ever think is about leaving Sydney" If this story was set in third person then we would have only inferred her feelings through her facial expressions we wouldn't be so sure whether she was feeling upset or not.

I also like that this is a historical narrative and we can learn more about the Snowy mountains scheme and the era between 1958-1959 in a different perspective.

I like how the author hasn't used formal language as  the character, Eva, says "Cause"

I can relate the feeling of moving away as I had to move from Adelaide to Sydney and it was really hard. I really miss my friends and I couldn't see them or hang out with them any more unless they come for a visit like Val, which hasn't happened yet.

I also can connect with this book as last year we learnt about dams and I found out when I was researching on the Australian Prime ministers that Ben (Joseph) Chiffley started the Snowy Mountains scheme but it was continued by the Prime Minister of the time, Robert Menzies. Eva was also writing a letter to Robert Menzies about the dam being made in Lizzie's old village.

Some words that puzzled me were cannelloni, corduroy and kerosene lamps.

A prediction I made from the blurb was "Homes abandoned, people lost" the dam that was made in Lizzie's old village  caused lots of people to leave their homes an lots of people left.
